Timely diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and inhibition of the progression of vascular complications based on measuring the plasma cystatin C concentrations remain the cornerstone in clinical medicine. The present review discusses the prognostic significance of determining the plasma cystatin C levels in persons with potential risk factors for CKD and cerebrovascular diseases.
