The role of patient’s adherence in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in chronic kidney disease

Objective. Evaluation of the adherence to the correction of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney disease.
The development of hyperphosphatemia is a frequent occurrence among patients with chronic kidney disease, mainly at the terminal stage. Hyperphosphatemia is associated with higher rates of morbidity and mortality.
Patient’s adherence to the treatment of hyperphosphatemia plays an essential role in the success of the correction of this condition. In this review, five groups of factors that influence adherence to the treatment are examined in detail; they include patient’s characteristics; characteristics of disease; methods of the treatment, its pharmacoeconomic features; the effectiveness of the interaction between the attending physician and the patient.
